Reid Hoffman steps down from OpenAI board to avoid potential conflicts of interest

Foundational work in AI has been going on since the 1950s.

For more than a DECADE, Greylock has invested in AI startups, such as Cresta, Snorkel AI, Adept AI Labs, and Inflection AI, one that I personally co-founded.  OpenAI started in 2015—the same year I invested and joined its board.

It’s important to think beyond any one application, company, industry when it comes to AI, because I believe its impact will be on a much greater magnitude.

I am so grateful for the last eight years that I spent as a board member at OpenAI.  It’s been rewarding to work closely with Sam, Greg, Mira, and the rest of the OpenAI team.  I remain an ally to OpenAI and on call for anything that I can do to help the organization and its mission of beneficial AI for humanity.

Since the start, OpenAI and its board has been very careful to monitor and avoid any conflicts to date.  But by stepping off the board, I can proactively put to rest any downstream potential issues for both OpenAI and all Greylock portfolio companies I’ve backed.
